What is Depression

Depression strikes one in five people every year. To some that maybe a small number but to those who experience depression is a huge issue for them.

Depression affects their lives and their family. In some cases a lot of people will take their own lives because they do not get the help they need.

Sometimes people don't realise when others may be depressed and often question what depression is. Depression is the name for a group of illnesses, which in turn affects the way someone feels. From past experience and from what I have read and from what others have told me it is also characterised by a lowering of one's mood.

When you or someone is feeling depressed there may be a range of things that they or you are feeling at the time, such as:

  • Sleeping and eating patterns may change

  • A lack of energy or feeling run down

  • Feeling hopeless, helpless and even worthless

  • Losing interested in activities that one would normally enjoy

  • Crying, feeling agitated and not understanding why

  • Feeling sick, headaches, stomach ache, butterflies in the stomach, nervous

  • A feeling of emptiness

  • You may feel anxious

  • Withdraw from your family, friends or groups

  • The use of alcohol or drugs increases
